STORY TIME WITH UŊČĺ & LALÁ
The Raccoon and the Bee Tree

June 18 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am

Join us for Story Time every Tuesday at 10:30 AM CDT. While the program is designed for elementary-age children, stories read by elders from the Lakota and Dakota communities will be captivating for children of all ages.

Today our story is The Raccoon and the Bee TreeWritten by Charles A. Eastman and Elaine Goodale Eastman.  Illustrated by Susan Turnbull.  Published by the South Dakota State Historical Society; Illustrated Edition. (September 2009)

About the story:  In southeastern South Dakota, wild animals begin to stir as day turns to dusk. A curious raccoon emerges from his bed and starts hunting for food. Tempted by sticky honey oozing from a bee’s nest, the little raccoon finds trouble he did not bargain for. The Raccoon and the Bee Tree combines an old American Indian tale written down by Charles Eastman and Elaine Goodale Eastman with a traditional European fable. Written one hundred years ago, The Raccoon and the Bee Tree has a lesson for children that is still important and relevant in today’s modern society.

A cultural activity will follow the reading. The event is free and open to everyone – come join the fun!
