Known for: Lakota historian, educator, author, and cultural advocate.

Born and raised on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in Dupree, South Dakota, Donovin Sprague is a historian, author, artist, and musician descended from the Hump and Crazy Horse families. His Lakota-Cheyenne grandparents were Hump I and Hump II, and his lineage also includes Fred Dupris and Mary Good Elk Woman.

Donovin earned degrees from Black Hills State University and the University of South Dakota and has taught at numerous institutions, including Oglala Lakota College, the University of Iowa, and Sheridan College, Wyoming, where he has served on faculty since 2020.

He is the author of ten books in American Indian studies, including his forthcoming manuscript High Backbone and Crazy Horse: Lakota-Cheyenne History from a Family View. An award-winning woodworker and flute maker, Donovin also performs as a guitarist and vocalist and operates a music business across South Dakota and Wyoming.

A tribal historian and consultant for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, he has worked with major museums and cultural institutions nationwide and presents internationally on Lakota-Cheyenne history and culture.
