Preserving and promoting awareness of the Lakota language is very important to St. Joseph's Indian School and the future of our students.

We invite you to learn basic phrases and words of the Lakota language with our students.

Lakota Words

Hawk - četaŋ (chehtahn)
Coyote - mayaleca (mahyahshlehchah)
Otter - ptaŋ (ptan)
Porcupine - pahiŋ (pahheen)
Prairie Dog - pispisza (pishpeezah)
Big - taŋka (tonka)
Little - cik’ala (cheekala)
People - oyate (oyate)
